SHOWTIME!

Game Designer - Game Programmer

Showtime is a short endless runner game for web platforms developed in 48 for the Global Game Jam 2024.

Embark on an endless running adventure as a charismatic circus clown, navigating a dynamic obstacle course on a mechanical treadmill. Strive to achieve the farthest distance, surpass your personal best, and dazzle the audience with a spectacular performance at the Showtime circus

Genre: Casual, Arcade

Platform: Web

Developed for: Global Game Jam 2024

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The game is in third person with a front view of the character (the player will run towards the camera). To avoid obstacles, the player can move horizontally within the space limited by the conveyor belt and jump over them. Obstacles will damage the player, restricting their movement, making them slower to move sideways, and disabling the jump ability. If objects thrown by the audience hit the player, their movement will be affected by body physics, causing a loss of stability (ragdoll effect).

As the player progresses, a point counter will increase over time. If the current score surpasses the previous one, it will be updated to the new value.

If the player falls into the mud or is knocked off the conveyor belt, the score will stop accumulating, and the game will end, returning to the start menu and saving the score if necessary.

As time progresses in the game, the difficulty will also increase. The speed of obstacles appearing on the conveyor belt and objects thrown by the audience will progressively increase.

GAME REFERENCES

  • Crash Bandicoot: The game takes inspiration from the first game in the Crash Bandicoot series for its movement mechanics and signature camera.

  • Fall Guys and Gang Beast: Gang Beast and Fall Guys are benchmarks for the type of movement sought within the game, seeking a balance between Gang Beast's clumsiness and Fall Guys' stability. Both games feature the ragdoll body system, however, they feature different levels of stability within the body.

GAME JAM THEME

For the Global Game Jam 2024, the theme was "Make me laugh." Our team brainstormed various ways to interpret this theme. We particularly liked the idea of an entertainer, such as a joker, comedian, or clown, who must keep their show going despite challenges.

Ultimately, we settled on the concept of a clown running on a conveyor belt, dodging obstacles and objects thrown by the audience. The game incorporates humorous elements like ragdoll physics to add to the fun and chaotic nature of the gameplay.

HAZARDS

Hazards are classified into two types: Throwable Hazards and Belt Hazards.

If the player hits any of the 2 types of Hazards, the ragdoll body will activate.

BELT HAZARDS

Belt hazards are obstacles that appear directly on the conveyor belt where the player runs. These obstacles come in three categories: small, wide, and tall.

The player can jump over both small and wide obstacles but cannot jump over the tall ones.

THROWABLE HAZARDS

Throwable hazards are objects hurled by the audience in the circus to see you fail. These objects start appearing in the air once the player has travelled a significant distance.
